June 2022: FI Journey Update

If you’ve been following our journey, then you know our path to financial independence (FI) includes a major milestone early on — a move north to our cabin in the woods.

Making this move will not only get us to the place where we’re happiest, but to a far more balanced life overall.

It’s an opportunity for us to scale back from work in a big way, leaving more time for the things that bring us the most joy — all of which, conveniently, happen to be free.

Last month, I started a new job that will give us that flexibility. We’re now free to make the move whenever we’re ready. And while this has always been a part of the plan, we originally thought it would take a few more years.

There’s nothing to say we have to make the move any sooner . We could continue on with our current plan, making the most of the next few years with two full-time incomes to stash away as much as possible before taking the leap.

There’s just one problem. With our biggest obstacle out of the way, waiting suddenly feels so much harder.

The more our plans start falling into place, the more we realize that it was never really about early retirement. Sure — that’s a huge bonus, but having the life we want right now is so much more valuable.

So what would you do?

Buckle down for a few more years? Or take the leap and adjust course along the way?
